Tour of Kula & Ulupalakua
The word that might best describe Kula and Ulapalukua is serenity. This upcountry area is dotted with jackaranda trees that burst forth masses of purple blossoms in the spring and early summer. Due to its elevation of 3000 ft above sea level, Kula is much cooler all year round. You will likely see goats and horses on the farms as you are riding your bike. This area is the inspiration for many local artists. This road route will likely inspire you too. You can park near Grandma’s Coffee House and ride to the Tedeschi winery or pick your own upcountry route. Endless riding with stunning views, what could be better?
DIRECTIONS AND TERRAIN:
Drive upcountry on Haleakala Highway 37. Stay on this main road as it turns Kula Highway and head towards Ulupalakua Rd. Look for Grandma’s Coffee on the right hand side of road as you head south.
CRATER CYCLES TIPS:
- Parking: Park near Grandma’s Coffee and descend to the winery (or farther if you’d like). The trail starts at the winery and finishes at a line next to Grandma’s Coffee house.
- Recommendations: We recommend bringing spare air, tubes, extra hydration and snacks.
- Rain Gear: It is a good idea to bring a light jacket for unexpected cooler weather.
